Stop pretending women in politics are inherently better

Article here. Excerpt:

'After former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman flamed out last month, a rallying cry burst across the internet: Elect more women!

New York state Sen. David Carlucci explained it thus:

“After over 240 years of men as our leading law enforcement officer, it is clear that a women’s voice in the attorney general’s office is desperately needed at this time. Doing so would send a message to all New Yorkers, and to our nation that we are a state that values fairness and respect of all of its residents.”

Sounds tempting. But Carlucci’s flawed logic assumes that women do or should represent fairness and respect for all, and that the symbolic value of their leadership “at this time” is the “clear” response to men’s bad behavior.

What about all the other times? It seems that some male politicians are so desperate to virtue signal to women, they’re willing to elevate them high above the normal expectations for the rest of humanity.'
